It’s Father’s Day! Smile!

You can’t be the life of the party without a spectacular smile. Studies have shown that smiling at work and in your personal life can greatly improve the moods of those around you. As the saying goes, smiling is contagious.

Do you like your smile? Small blemishes and imperfections on your teeth can make you self-conscious, causing you to smile less or hide your smile in public. This Father’s Day, Atlanta’s family and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Peter Pate, can help you put your best smile forward.

A Wide Variety of Cosmetic Dentistry Choices

At Dentistry in Buckhead, we offer a wide variety of cosmetic procedures to shape your smile into a masterpiece. If you’re short on time and would like to brighten your smile quickly, our in-office Zoom! treatment can lighten your teeth in just one office visit. The procedure often results in teeth that are eight to ten shades brighter. We also offer professional-strength take-home whitening kits that enable you to whiten when your schedule allows.

Porcelain veneers can cover a variety of imperfections at once. They can change the shape, size, and color of multiple teeth to create optimal uniformity. Modern, minimally invasive veneers are secured to the front of your teeth to create a flawless smile.

For chipped or permanently stained teeth, Dr. Pate may recommend dental bonding. This quick cosmetic procedure involves applying a tooth-colored composite resin that works like sculpting clay. Dr. Pate hardens the resin using a curing light, then sculpts and polishes the resin to the ideal shape. If you have only one or two blemished teeth, bonding is a simple and inexpensive alternative to porcelain veneers.

Your Smile is Your Choice

A healthy, beautiful smile is no accident. At our office, it is the combined effort of a devoted dentist and an informed patient. After a comprehensive exam, Dr. Pate will consult with you to decide the best option for achieving the smile of your dreams. To schedule a consultation, call Dentistry in Buckhead at (404) 266-9424. We proudly welcome patients from the Buckhead area, as well as Sandy Springs, Lenox, Brookhaven, Atlanta, and surrounding communities.

Is Your Mouth Ready to Travel?

Woman closing overloaded suitcase Going on vacation during the winter holiday? When you’re packing, don’t forget your dental travel kit. While you can find ready-made kits online or at your local pharmacy, it’s usually better to make your own, especially if you use a non-standard toothpaste or mouthwash. You should definitely include the following:

Toothbrush:Some travel brushes have hard bristles—make sure you pick one with soft bristles. If you’re traveling with others, be sure to label the toothbrushes, or get different-colored brushes to avoid mix-ups.   You can even take your power toothbrush on the road. Sonicare has released the DiamondClean model that conveniently charges from your computer with a USB connection.

Toothpaste: You can find travel-size tubes of most kinds of toothpaste at your grocery store or pharmacy. Ask Dr. Pate for a sample if you don’t see yours at the store.

Mouthwash: Find a travel-size container or fill an empty travel bottle with your favorite mouthwash. If you use a prescription mouthwash, fill and label a small travel container.

Floss: This is the one dental care item most people forget! Try a new variety of floss while you’re on vacation. If you use floss picks, find a small plastic baggie and bring more than you think you’ll need. (more…)

Healthy Gifts for Mother’s Day

While Mom takes care of everyone in the home, she often forgets to take care of herself. Instead of buying your mother a sweet treat or a precious bauble for Mother’s Day, consider giving her a healthy gift this year.

To ease Mom’s stress, how about something to induce relaxation and tranquility? Increase her feeling of zen with a yoga mat and instructional video. Yoga can decrease back pain, promote quality sleep, and lower stress!

Instead of a bouquet of cut flowers, give your mother a set of windowsill flower containers. You can purchase pots that come with soil and seeds (pansies, marigolds, poppies). She will smile each time she sees the beautiful blooms.

Since Mom is constantly on the go, keep her hydrated with a personalized water bottle or energized with a unique coffee thermos. These containers can easily be customized with family photos and sayings. Your mother will think of you each time she reaches for it.

I can also offer a fun gift for your mother! To put a smile on Mom’s face, call me, Dr. Peter Pate of Dentistry in Buckhead, to schedule a Zoom! whitening appointment.  This in-office whitening system can lighten teeth between 8-10 shades in one visit. To schedule an appointment, call our Buckhead dental office at (404)266-9424. Remember to value your mother today, and every day, and thank her for all she has done for you.

Fun Dental Facts on Former Presidents

In honor of Presidents Day, we thought it would be fun to explore the dental history of some former US presidents.

George Washington – Growing up, we always thought that George Washington’s false teeth were made of wood.  Scientists have proven this theory untrue.  Washington actually had several sets of ill-fitting dentures made of various materials, including hippopotamus ivory, sea lion ivory, and lead, as well as teeth from pigs, cows, elks, and humans.

John Adams – President Adams had an incredible sweet tooth, which contributed to the loss of his teeth.  However, this was not the only factor.  Adams was in the habit of inducing vomiting to cure other ailments. He refused to wear dentures, and this led to difficulty speaking.  After encountering a fellow senior citizen, Adams wrote: “He is above 80. I cannot speak, and he cannot hear.  Yet we converse.”

Are You Ready for Friday Night Lights in Atlanta?

High school football is back, and most of our local teams hit the field this week. Some of our schools are perennial powers. Some are new programs. Some are rebuilding. All offer a great opportunity for some good old-fashioned fun and healthy competition.

Head out to a high school football game with your friends, neighbors, and family this Friday, and be sure to kick off the night with a tailgate picnic. (Throw some dental floss in the ice chest to rid your teeth of those pesky popcorn kernels, and be sure to rinse with water after drinking sugar-filled sodas!) You’ll get caught up in the excitement, crazy fans and team spirit as you cheer on your team.

Call your local high school for game time and ticket information, or plan to purchase tickets at the gate. And if you have a football player in the family, be sure he wears an athletic mouthguard! At Dentistry in Buckhead, we care about community, kids, and strong, healthy smiles. And we know how to have fun.
