Our team understands how frustrating it can be to navigate your dental insurance plan without knowledge of how to do so. That’s why we’re always happy to help you get the most out of your benefits by filing claims and any related paperwork for you, so you can maximize your coverage and reimbursement. If you have any questions about what’s covered by your plan and what’s not, our team would also be happy to assist you in finding this out by filing pre-authorization benefits checks before you plan your procedure so you know exactly what to expect financially.
Below, we’ve outlined some helpful dental insurance basics, but don’t hesitate to call us if you have any lingering questions.
Many patients think dental insurance and medical insurance are similar in nature, but the reality is that they operate very differently. Medical insurance covers all visits and treatments to some degree, whether it’s an emergency, routine visit, or preventive treatment. In this way, medical insurance has a greater variety of uses that benefit patients.
On the other hand, dental insurance is focused heavily on covering preventive services, like checkups and cleanings and minor treatments, like tooth-colored fillings. This is because these companies aim to minimize the cost they need to pay out for services by pushing patients to see the dentist more regularly. Hypothetically, this front-end coverage then ensures that patients don’t require more extensive treatments, like dental implants or tooth extractions. However, we know that’s not how it plays out for everyone.
In an effort to keep our fees competitive and as low as possible, our team is not in-network with any dental insurance plans, but that doesn’t mean that we’re not affordable! In fact, that just means that our fees are fair for everyone, regardless of what treatments they require.
Dental insurance typically operates using a 100-80-50 coverage structure. This means that they cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive appointments like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of minor services like cavity fillings, and only 50 percent of more extensive treatments like root canals. In order to learn how much your plan will cover of a certain treatment, our team will submit a pre-authorization with them so we can provide you with a breakdown of the costs that will be covered by your insurance and that you may need to cover out-of-pocket.
At Dentistry in Buckhead, our team never recommends unnecessary treatments or prioritizes profit over our patients’ health and wellbeing. For this reason, we remain out-of-network with dental insurance companies, allowing us to recommend needed procedures that aren’t based on your dental insurance coverage, but your oral health status. By doing this, we’re able to offer fair fees for everyone we see, and in many cases, we’re able to charge about the same fees as in-network providers!
